There are 4 types of markets ( according to Dow theory 3)
1.Uptrend
2.Downtrend
3.Sideways
4.Dull markets( do not trade during this time just stand aside)
Every trend strategy will work only during trending markets and sideways strategy work during sideways markets the key to success is to know the markets.
Even the most simple trend strategy is working on trending markets for example SMA 10/20 period crossover is good and working just fine however only during trending markets during sideways markets has very poor performance.In that case you will need sideways strategy.
